An Introduction to Autism: Supporting Needs in Your School

Course Overview:
This half day course will provide a sound introduction into the core features of Autism and neurodivergence. We will look at the nature of inclusion and explore how the features of Autism may present in the children you support and teach, both challenges and strengths. We will look at a range of QFT strategies and resources and how they support all children including more complex and challenging needs. Those attending will have opportunities throughout to discuss their practice and the needs of the children they are working with as well as receive strategy checklists to support practice in their schools.

  • What is inclusion and inclusive practice?
  • What are the core features of Autism?
  • Supporting more challenging needs
  • Working with families: What is best practice?
  • What is TEACCH? How to develop consistent whole school visual approaches
  • What challenges might children with Autism experience?
  • How does Autism present in girls compared with boys?
  • Supporting more challenging needs
  • What strategies, resources and inclusive provision reduce barriers for children with Autism?

About Paul Cabb:
Paul has over 30 years of experience in education. Beginning his career as a primary school teacher, he was part of SLT’s and ran social/life skills interventions. A passion for SEND saw Paul complete a Master’s degree in education at the Central School of Speech of Drama as well as further post-graduate study into Autism and neurodiversity. Following twelve years as Social Communication Difficulties outreach advisor across primary, secondary, and specialist provisions for Bromley LEA, Paul set up an independent advisory service. His service: Social Eyes, provides individual pupil/student caseload strategy/ intervention advice, CPD training, voluntary services forums and family workshops in Bromley, Lewisham, Croydon, and Greenwich.
