Uncovering the Mask – Understanding Masking and ASC
null

For ECT’s and experienced staff across the entire age range. This half day course will provide a sound introduction into understanding the nature of Masking.  There is much debate in the media, society, schools and families around Masking.  Whilst understanding and research is developing there are also many myths which impact on whether and how Masking is seen especially but not solely in girls on the Autistic Spectrum.  By its’ very nature how do we know if a child is Masking their Authentic Self to belong or fit in?  Is Masking entirely negative or are there positives and skills to be developed?  What impact can long term Masking have on identity and mental health?  How can we support belonging and families who fear their child is being misunderstood?

  • What is Masking and is it entirely and neurodivergent trait?
  • Why are neurodivergent children and especially ASC girls more likely to Mask?
  • What potential signs are there that a child is significantly Masking and what are the likely reasons
  • What impact can Masking potentially have?
  • How do we work with families and staff to help children to grow into their Authentic selves?
